Everything You Should Know Before Seeing The Housemaid

“The Housemaid” originated as a 2022 novel by Freida McFadden, which became a cultural phenomenon through its explosive popularity on social media platforms, particularly TikTok’s BookTok community. The book became a New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestseller and won the 2023 ITW Thriller Award.

Apart from her life as an author, Freida McFadden —  which is a pen name — is a physician specializing in brain disorders. Her expertise has undoubtedly been a core component of what makes her written works so compelling and terrifyingly realistic. The novel has sold over 1.6 million copies and spawned two full-length sequels and a short story. To date, McFadden has released over 30 works.

McFadden announced the film’s production on Instagram, and principal photography began in January 2025 in New Jersey with Paul Feig directing.

Movie Plot

Millie Calloway, a young woman with a troubled past, becomes a live-in housemaid for a wealthy family, desperately seeking stability after brushes with the law left her struggling to find work. The Winchester family appears to offer everything she needs: steady employment, room and board, and a chance to rebuild her life. But from the moment Millie steps into their immaculate mansion, something feels wrong.

The refined Nina Winchester, the lady of the house, becomes dangerously erratic, and Millie watches as the Winchesters’ seemingly perfect life unravels around her. In a house full of secrets, nothing is as it appears. Everyone has hidden agendas, and the truth will shatter everything Millie thought she understood about her employers.

Director: Paul Feig

Despite taking the lead of the movie adaptation of Freida McFadden’s sensational psychological thriller, Paul Feig is best known for directing comedic films such as “Bridesmaids” (2011), “The Heat” (2013), and “Spy” (2015). He also directed the hotly controversial reboot “Ghostbusters” (2016), the comedic thriller “A Simple Favor” (2018), and its sequel “Another Simple Favor” (2025).

Last but not least, Feig got his major start as the creator of the comedy TV show “Freaks and Geeks” (1999–2000), which became a cult classic and helped launch the careers of Linda Cardellini, James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, and more.
