Everything You Should Know Before TRON: Ares

“TRON: Ares” is the third full-length TRON movie to enter the iconic science fiction franchise. The TRON universe began in the mind of Steven Lisberger, who conceived the original 1982 film during the early days of computer technology. The premise was that programs existed as living beings within each computer, complete with their own societies and conflicts. The original film starred Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer at ENCOM who becomes trapped inside a digital world called the Grid and must fight to survive with the help of the sentient program Tron, voiced by Bruce Boxleitner, and return to the real world.

When “TRON” debuted in 1982, it was a box office disappointment. It received mixed critical reception, with Roger Ebert calling it “sensational and brainy, stylish, and fun,” while The New York Times was more critical. Nevertheless, the film was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Sound and Best Costume Design.

Despite its slow start, “TRON” became a cult classic, spawning multiple video game adaptations. These games helped expand on the movie’s original universe and held the fans’ collective interest during its dormant years.

In 2010, “TRON: Legacy” was released, which centered on Kevin Flynn’s son, Sam, and was followed up by the short film “TRON: The Next Day” (2011), which filled in the timeline between 1982 and 2010. In 2012, Disney also released an animated series, “TRON: Uprising.”

“TRON: Ares,” however, appears to be set in the original world of the franchise, but not tied too heavily to the previous installations. This means you won’t be lost if you go into the new movie blind, but we encourage you to check out the other films:

  1. TRON (1982): Tech genius Kevin Flynn is transported inside a computer to the digital world of the Grid. With the help of the heroic program, Tron, Flynn must survive the strange and dangerous society and escape back to the real world.
  2. TRON: The Next Day (short film, 2011): In 1989, Kevin Flynn, now CEO of ENCOM, vanishes without a trace, and a secret movement rises from the shadows, refusing to let his legacy die. Twenty years later, the truth behind years of conspiracy and cover-ups finally surfaces — because some things are too powerful to stay buried forever.
  3. TRON: Legacy (2010): Twenty years after his father vanished, Sam Flynn receives a mysterious message that leads him into the Grid where programs have evolved beyond imagination. In this neon-lit realm of impossible geometries and high-speed light cycle battles, Sam must navigate deadly games and find his father.
  4. TRON: Uprising (animated series, 2012-2013): In the shadow of an oppressive regime, a young program named Beck witnesses the brutal occupation of his home city and makes a choice that will ignite a revolution.

All TRON installments, excluding the short film, are available to view on Disney+.

Director: Joachim Rønning

Rønning’s breakthrough came with the Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominated film “Kon-Tiki” (2012) with co-director Espen Sandberg.

Rønning has since directed major Disney productions, including “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” (2017) and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” (2019). His most recent work before “TRON: Ares” was “Young Woman and the Sea” (2024) starring Daisy Ridley.

Movie Plot

When a highly sophisticated program called Ares is summoned from the Grid for a dangerous mission, the walls between the digital and physical worlds are shattered. With superintelligent hostile programs breaching into our world, humanity must confront the consequences of its technological achievements, with the fate of both worlds hanging in the balance.

Genre

Like its predecessors, “TRON: Ares” is an electric mix of cyberpunk, action, adventure, and sci-fi. The new TRON movie is expected to “raise the bar to the next level,” according to director Joachim Rønning, focusing on practical effects over digital ones.

Runtime

The runtime for “TRON: Ares” is 1 hour and 59 minutes.

Rating

“TRON: Ares” is rated PG-13 by the MPA for Violence and Action.

The newest addition to the TRON franchise will arrive exclusively to theaters and IMAX on October 10, 2025.
