Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Bugonia

“Bugonia” is an English-language remake of the South Korean science fiction comedy “Save The Green Planet!” which was written and directed by Jang Joon-hwan. Mixing horror, sci-fi, comedy, and even a touch of martial arts movies, “Save the Green Planet!” follows the delusional Lee Byeong-gu, who is convinced that the Earth is about to be invaded by alien forces. In an attempt to avert disaster, Byeong-gu kidnaps the CEO of a pharmaceutical company, convinced that he is an extraterrestrial who can call off the attack.

The original film gained attention for being wildly unpredictable, violent, and loony all at once. While met with positive and critical reviews alike — both spurred largely by the film’s subversive elements and shocking fourth act — the film’s cult status grew over the years, and has finally reached the attention of Hollywood!

The new remake, like its predecessor, is set to be a science fiction black comedy. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos from a screenplay by Will Tracy, the adaptation brings together a stellar cast including Emma Stone, fresh off her Oscar-winning performance in “Poor Things” (which was also directed by Lanthimos) in 2023, and Jesse Plemons, known for his roles “The Power of the Dog” (2021) and “Breaking Bad” (2008-2013) While specific plot details remain under wraps, the general premise seems to remain intact as well as the themes of corporate corruption, mistrust, and conspiracy theories.

Yorgos Lanthimos

Born in Athens, Greece, director Yorgos Lanthimos became known for his unconventional storytelling and surreal imagery. He gained international recognition with “Dogtooth” (2009), a disturbing family drama that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

In 2023, Lanthimos’ film “Poor Things” won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and then earned 11 Academy Award nominations, winning four. His other notable works include “The Lobster” (2015), “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” (2017), and “The Favourite” (2018), which garnered 10 Oscar nominations.

Movie Plot

Two unhinged young men become humanity’s unlikely guardians against an extraterrestrial threat hiding in plain sight. After kidnapping a powerful corporate executive, convinced she’s an alien mastermind plotting Earth’s destruction, their desperate interrogation becomes a twisted game of cat-and-mouse where sanity hangs by a thread.

As the line between delusion and truth blurs beyond recognition, their captive may indeed be something far more sinister than anyone could imagine. Or she could be an innocent victim trapped by two dangerous madmen.

Genre

Like its source material, “Bugonia” defies conventional genre tropes and instead mixes elements of Comedy, Psychological Horror, Thriller, Crime, and Sci-Fi.

“Bugonia” is reported to have a runtime of 1 hour and 58 minutes, the exact length of its predecessor.
