Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Zootopia 2
The original “Zootopia” was released in 2016 and immediately made a name for itself. Starring a cast of animals of all shapes and sizes, the buddy cop comedy was lavishly colorful, full of adventure and heart, and a perfect popcorn flick for all ages. However, Disney took it a step further. The film masterfully explored themes of prejudice, diversity, and social justice by creating a world where predators and prey live together in an uneasy peace. Directors Byron Howard, Rich Moore, and Jared Bush showed just how easily that peace can be disrupted and, more importantly, how it can be built back better.
“Zootopia” won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2017. The movie became the second-highest-grossing original film of all time, second only to James Cameron’s “Avatar” (2009). “Zootopia” earned over $1 billion worldwide and received widespread critical acclaim for both its storytelling and social commentary. The movie was praised for its ability to tackle complex themes while keeping things accessible to younger audiences through clever humor and three-dimensional (albeit very cuddly) characters.
The sequel is set to start off just a week after the conclusion of the events of the first film. The plot of the first movie wrapped up nicely, so watching the original isn’t likely mandatory to enjoy the new film, but we absolutely recommend seeing it.
Zootopia (2016) Synopsis — Spoilers
In the city of Zootopia, animals of all species live in harmony — at least on the surface. Judy Hopps, the first bunny on the police force, struggles to be taken seriously and is assigned to meter maid duty. Eager to prove herself, she gets a chance to investigate a missing otter and teams up with sly fox Nick Wilde, a con artist with a hidden heart of gold.
Their search uncovers a disturbing pattern: several predators have gone “savage,” reverting to wild behavior. Mayor Lionheart has been secretly imprisoning them, hoping to contain the panic. Judy exposes him but accidentally sparks fear and prejudice by implying predators are inherently dangerous, straining her friendship with Nick and causing her to quit the force.
Back home, Judy learns the predators were poisoned by a plant toxin called Night Howlers. She reconciles with Nick, and together they expose Assistant Mayor Bellwether as the real mastermind. He has been using the toxin to incite fear and gain power. With her plot revealed, the city begins to heal, and Judy and Nick join the police force as true partners.

Zootopia 2 (2025)
Disney CEO Bob Iger officially announced the Zootopia sequel during the company’s Q1 earnings call in February 2023.
At the D23 Expo in August 2024, Disney showcased exclusive footage featuring Nick and Judy searching for the mysterious reptile character, Gary, in a location called Marsh Market, giving fans their first glimpse of the sequel’s expanded world. The clip has not been publicly released.
In May 2025, Disney released an official teaser trailer featuring Gary and a dark, dangerous-looking cloaked character. Speculation online led to a number of theories regarding this character’s identity, including it being a snake-hunting owl, a crime boss, a rogue police officer, or even Nick Wilde’s dad. Strangely, the character was completely absent from the film’s official trailer (see below).
Unlike the first film’s focus on predator-prey dynamics, this sequel appears to explore new territory by introducing reptiles into the mammal-dominated society. With race relations on full display in the original film, this sequel could bring in topics like immigration, acceptance, and how expanding communities often make them stronger.
Directors: Jared Bush, Byron Howard
Jared Bush and Byron Howard are back to direct “Zootopia 2” after their successful work on the original film alongside Rich Moore. While the trio shared both directing and writing credits of the first film, Bush and Howard are still directing, but only Bush is credited with writing this new sequel.
Both Bush and Byron have a long history of working at Disney. The duo co-wrote and co-directed “Encanto” (2021) alongside Charise Castro Smith. Howard also directed “Bolt” in 2008 and “Tangled” in 2010, and Bush was a writer on “Moana” (2016) and its 2024 sequel “Moana 2.”
Movie Plot
Judy and Nick are chasing down a mysterious snake whose arrival in Zootopia is sparking chaos throughout the mammal metropolis. In order to hunt down the newcomer and uncover his true intentions, Judy and Nick will have to go undercover through strange and never-before-seen neighborhoods of Zootopia. The pair must put their partnership to the test and follow the twisting trail wherever it leads.

Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman are both returning to voice Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. Goodwin is known for her TV role as Mary Margaret Blanchard (Snow White) in “Once Upon a Time.” Bateman, truly showing the extent of his acting range, is famous for his comedic role as Michael Bluth in “Arrested Development” and his dark portrayal of Martin Byrde in the crime drama series “Ozark” on Netflix.
Joining the principal cast is Ke Huy Quan, voicing Gary De’Snake. Quan recently gave an Oscar-winning performance as Waymond Wang in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2022). Quan also did voice acting as Han in “Kung Fu Panda 4” (2024).
