2023 Champions League Final Results

The final began with a surprising change as Kyle Walker sat on the bench for Manchester City, replaced by Nathan Aké in the starting line-up. In contrast, Inter Milan maintained the same starting line-up from previous rounds. Both teams had opportunities to score early in the first half, but Inter’s André Onana made two crucial saves to deny Manchester City the lead. In the 26th minute, Nicolò Barella seized a misplaced pass from Ederson but failed to convert his shot over the goalkeeper. Unfortunately, Kevin De Bruyne suffered a hamstring injury and was substituted by Phil Foden in the 36th minute. The first half concluded without any goals, as Inter adopted a defensive approach to impede Manchester City’s momentum.

During the second half, Romelu Lukaku entered the field to replace former Manchester City striker Edin Džeko, immediately creating a scoring opportunity with a header. In the 59th minute, Ederson was unable to control a backpass from Manuel Akanji, allowing Lautaro Martínez of Inter to take a shot from near the touchline, which Ederson managed to block. City eventually broke the deadlock in the 68th minute when Rodri scored from a pulled-back pass by Bernardo Silva, sent from near the goal to the top of the penalty area. Inter had a chance to equalize three minutes later when defender Federico Dimarco’s header struck the crossbar. Dimarco attempted to capitalize on the rebound, but Lukaku blocked his shot. The Belgian striker himself had a close-range header opportunity in the 89th minute, which Ederson thwarted with his legs. In stoppage time, Ederson made an additional save from Robin Gosens’s header, securing a 1-0 victory for Manchester City.

What is the Champions League?

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League Final is the annual football (soccer) tournament that decides Europe’s best club. The two teams vying for the title emerge after months-long postseason playoff matches featuring the top-performing teams from each of Europe’s domestic leagues.

Each European country has its own domestic leagues, including the Premier League in England, La Liga in Spain, Bundesliga in Germany, Serie A in Italy, and Ligue 1 in France. There are 30 member leagues eligible to compete in the Champions League and Europa League (the second-tier tournament).

Thirty-two teams across those member leagues make up the initial group stage of the tournament. The group stage consists of eight groups of four teams playing a round-robin style stage where the top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stages. The knockout stage consists of 16 teams playing win-or-go-home matches. This leads into the round-of-16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final. The two teams that win their brackets in the knockout stage advance to the UEFA Champions League Final.

The final is a single match, scheduled for 90 minutes of regulation play. If the score is tied after 90 minutes, extra time (and potentially a penalty shootout) is used to determine the winner.
