Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is the fifth film installment in the Mad Max universe, originating from the mind of director George Miller. The franchise exploded onto the silver screen in 1979 with the release of “Mad Max,” starring a then relatively unknown Mel Gibson in the titular role of Max Rockatansky. Originally released only in Australia, the film debuted in the U.S. the following year and went on to amass a worldwide box office gross of nearly $100 million. The film’s budget was estimated to be as low as $200,000, making it the most profitable film of its time and landing it a place in the Guinness World Records

In 1982, Miller released a sequel, “Mad Max 2,” which appeared in U.S. theaters as “The Road Warrior.” The third film, “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” was released in 1985. Both movies saw commercial success, but even with a budget now in the millions, the revenue was modest by comparison and didn’t reach the original film’s worldwide box office numbers. Nevertheless, the second film is held in high regard by audiences and critics alike, having a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93% on the Tomatometer and 86% across over 50,000 viewer ratings. The third film is more controversial, with a split Rotten Tomatoes score of 81% compared to the audience score of 49%, with reviewers largely criticizing pacing and originality but hailing the scenes surrounding the Thunderdome itself

Thirty years later, in 2015, Mel Gibson passed the mantle of Max Rockatansky to Tom Hardy in the fourth installment, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” where viewers were introduced to Charlize Theron’s character, Furiosa, for the first time. The movie marked the franchise’s entry into the modern age of Hollywood blockbusters with a budget of $150 million. The film was a triumph, earning double what it had invested and receiving 10 nominations and six wins at the 88th Academy Awards in 2016.

The internet is also swirling with rumors of an upcoming production called “Mad Max: The Wasteland,” but as of this writing, nothing official has been confirmed.

To fully immerse yourself in George Miller’s post-apocalyptic world, be sure to watch each Mad Max movie ahead of the latest installment. While chronology can be confusing, as viewers have noted both contradictions and inter-movie continuity, it may be best to think of each film—especially with the addition of “Mad Max: Fury Road” 30 years after its predecessors—as neither sequel nor reboot but rather a revisiting of the same well of connected legends.

1. Mad Max (1979): As the world suffers environmental and societal collapse, the few remaining law enforcement agencies are overwhelmed by marauders and criminal biker gangs. When the violence goes too far, the once-weary patrolman, Max Rockatansky, goes rogue to seek his revenge.

“Mad Max” can be streamed for free on Tubi, PlutoTV, or with a Prime Video subscription.

2. Mad Max 2 / The Road Warrior (1981): As fuel reserves dry up across the continent, Max stumbles upon an oil refinery controlled by a community of survivors and besieged by the violent  Lord Humungus and his brutal biker gang. To save the fuel and the settlers, Max must discover a way to get everyone and everything out of the refinery and away from Lord Humungus’ grasp.

“Mad Max 2” / “The Road Warrior” is available to view for free on Tubi.

3. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985): Stranded in a wasteland and desperate for fuel, Max happens upon a settlement called Bartertown, where disputes are settled in violent tournaments. Bartertown’s queen is prepared to provide Max with the fuel he needs if he undertakes a deadly challenge. When a tribe of children emerges from the desert, Max must find a way to secure their salvation and his own.

“Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” is currently available for purchase or rent across Prime Video, YouTube, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and Google Play

4. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015): Captured and imprisoned by a ruthless warlord in the middle of a vast and desolate country, Max realizes his only chance for escape may be to trust a woman named Furiosa and her unbreakable dream of returning to her people and the green paradise they called home.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” is currently available to stream with subscriptions to Max, Apple TV (through April 30, 2024), Hulu, and Prime Video.

George Miller

Native to Chinchilla, Australia, George Miller is most famous for his Mad Max franchise, set in a post-apocalyptic version of his home country. The original 1979 film was his first full-length directorial work following several shorts and the 52-minute “The Devil in Evening Dress.” His skills quickly captured imaginations worldwide, and his 2015 addition to the Mad Max franchise, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” landed the No.1 spot in Rolling Stone’s list of best action movies of all time.

His other notable directorial works include “Three Thousand Years of Longing” (2022), starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. He has also directed kids’ films such as “Happy Feet” (2006), “Happy Feet Two” (2011), and “Babe: Pig in the City” (1998).

Movie Plot

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” tells the origins of the rebel warrior, Imperator Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, before her run-ins with the legendary Mad Max.

Ripped from her lush and peaceful home by marauding bikers headed by Warlord Dementus, a young Furiosa is trafficked across the wastelands. When she and her kidnappers arrive at the stronghold known as The Citadel, ruled over by Immortan Joe, Furiosa finds herself in the middle of a battle for territory and power between two of the greatest warlords on the continent. Under a rain of gunfire, Furiosa must do what it takes to survive and find her way home.

Genre

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is, first and foremost, an action-adventure movie that promises to deliver the heat-pounding spectacle and adrenaline rush that director George Miller is known for. Naturally, it has also been tagged across IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes as an adventure film, and its post-apocalyptic setting places it well within the realm of Sci-Fi. IMDb goes one step further and tags the film as having elements of a thriller.

Runtime

As of this writing, no official runtime has been announced, although each of the film’s predecessors has been longer than the one before it, beginning with “Mad Max” at 1 hour and 28 minutes to “Mad Max: Fury Road” hitting the two-hour mark.

Rating

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is expected to receive an R rating like all of its franchise predecessors, with the exception of “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.” “Mad Max: Fury Road” received the R rating due to intense sequences of violence and disturbing images, as noted on Rotten Tomatoes.

If “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” receives the same rating upon its theatrical release, children under the age of 17 will be required to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Theatrical Release Date

The newest addition to the Mad Max franchise will be exploding into theaters on May 24, 2024.

Streaming Options

2024’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” will be released only in theaters. Remember that the film is not expected to hit theaters until the end of May, and its release is exclusive to cinemas. This means that any streaming platform offering the film before or around that time is certainly an unauthorized source. While there are many well-known illegal streaming platforms, others may still fly under the radar or appear to be legitimate. Cast & Crew

Anya Taylor-Joy will play a younger Furiosa in the new film, following Charlize Theron’s iconic portrayal in “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Given that “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is a Mad Max prequel, director George Miller opted to recast the character rather than use de-aging technology.

Taylor-Joy is more than up to the task. Her appearance in the film’s trailers, alongside an unrecognizable Chris Hemsworth, has fans clamoring for more.

As the movie explores Furiosa’s fight for freedom before her encounter with Max, it is unlikely that Tom Hardy will be reprising the role in any significant form beyond a hopeful cameo, and he is not listed among the official cast. Nathan Jones, however, will be returning as Rictus Erectus, but Immortan Joe will be played by Lachy Hulme following the passing of Hugh Keays-Byrne in 2020. Hulme was already cast and started filming for another character, but he convinced director George Miller to let him take a swing at honoring the late Keays-Byrne by taking up the role of Immortan Joe, and the rest is history.
