Young couple sitting together on the couch in the dark while watching a movie at home.

Gaze up into the night sky, and what will you find? A beautiful, endless tapestry of lights suspended in an onyx void. That beauty, though, holds something terrible. The dark reaches of space are cold and unforgiving — unwelcoming of human life — and death waits for anyone who ventures into the mysterious frontier. Such is the world of the upcoming movie, Mickey 17, a film surrounded by as much mystery as outer space itself.

Initially scheduled to release in theaters in March 2024, this highly anticipated sci-fi film was recently pushed back to January 2025.

Though the film will not be released until 2025, a lot of information has been announced. Below, you can find all the details and cast information you need to prepare for the upcoming movie.

Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Mickey 17

Mickey 17 marks director Bong Joon Ho’s return to feature films after the critically acclaimed success of his 2019 Oscar-winning movie, Parasite. In a Hollywood era deeply entrenched in sequels, spinoffs, and remakes of existing films, Mickey 17 promises a refreshing shift as a stand-alone feature, albeit adapted from the Edward Ashton novel, Mickey7.

IMDb lists both Bong Joon Ho and Edward Ashton as writers on the project, but it does not appear that Ashton has had involvement with the adaptation as a writer. The credit simply acknowledges his creation of the source material. In fact, Ashton states in a video interview by YouTuber Anthony Arnone that the novel was optioned by Warner Bros. Pictures as early as March 2020 — nearly two years before the book was available in print.

This high level of interest from the production studio led Mickey7 to land publishing contracts with Solaris Books in the U.K. and then St. Martin’s Press the U.S. The momentum continued, and the book then found itself on NPR’s Books We Love list for 2022. Bong Joon Ho eventually attached himself to the film alongside other industry heavyweights like Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, Robert Pattinson.

Originally slated for a theatrical release on March 29, 2024, Warner Bros. has since pushed the release date to January 2025 due to effects from the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Bong Joon Ho

Bong Joon Ho is most well known for his 2019 Korean-language film Parasite. The dark comedy thriller won four Academy Awards in 2020 – Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best International Feature Film.

Along with Parasite, Bong also directed Snowpiercer, a film that received massive praise from critics and audiences. Bong is a master of genre-mixing, dark comedy, and unexpected tonal shifts. Mickey 17 seems to continue this trend, based on the trailer. Although minimalistic and simple in approach, the trailer gives off elements of sci-fi, horror, and suspense.

Movie Plot

Not much is known about the plot of the movie itself or the direction Bong Joon Ho is taking the adaptation. In fact, IMDb currently lists the description as “Plot under wraps.”

However, the source material is well known. Potential spoilers below.

In the book, Mickey7 is known as an “Expendable” — a disposable, second-class member of a human crew sent to terraform and colonize the icy planet Niflheim. Every mission deemed too dangerous falls to him — and every time he dies, his body and memories are regenerated into a new iteration that takes his place. Six deaths, seven Mickeys. Never two at once.

During a scouting trip, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead, and by the time he returns to the colony base, Mickey8 has already been created to take his place. Knowing that one or both of his selves would be harvested for proteins should the existence of two Expendables come to light, Mickey7 must keep his duplicate a secret. Outside the base, the mission is unraveling. Conditions are worsening, food is growing scarce and the terraforming efforts are consistently failing. Meanwhile, the Niflheim natives are growing ever more curious of their human guests, sending panic and terror through the commanding ranks.

The survival of the mission, the humans, and the lifeforms that inhabit Niflheim’s frozen surface will ultimately come down to Mickey7.

Mickey 17 — the upcoming film — is likely to follow a similar arc.

Runtime

Though the new release date could affect this, the film is expected to have a runtime of 2 hours and 19 minutes.

Rating

The Motion Picture Association has not yet rated Mickey 17, but the sequences of peril, action, and language are expected to earn the film at least a PG-13 rating. However, director Bong Joon Ho’s last film, Parasite, was rated R.

Theatrical Release Date

Mickey 17 was originally scheduled for theatrical release on March 29, 2024, but has since been postponed to January 2025.

Streaming Options

Because the film won’t release until 2025, Mickey 17 will not be available for streaming until mid-2025, once its theatrical run has ended. There are no indications yet of which platforms it will be available for streaming on.
