Everything You Should Know Before Seeing The Fall Guy
“The Fall Guy” is an upcoming rom-com action movie set to release in theaters on May 3, 2024. Directed by David Leitch and starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, the movie is based on the television series of the same name that aired on 20th Century Fox from 1981 to 1986.
The 80s TV series, created by Glen A. Larson, comprised 112 episodes across five seasons. It followed Colt Seavers, played by Lee Majors, a stuntman moonlighting as a skilled bounty hunter. Unlike the TV show, Ryan Gosling plays a hero with little street smarts. As he yells out in the film trailer when confronted by danger, “I’m just a stunt guy!”
The female lead, originally a fellow stuntwoman played by Heather Thomas, is now a movie director played by Emily Blunt. The 2024 film has also changed Jody’s last name from Banks to Moreno. She is a passionate storyteller with a commitment to her career. As such, she wants to keep her relationship with Colt strictly professional—despite their past fling and undeniable chemistry.
In the original series, additional characters included bail bondswomen Samantha “Big Jack” Jack and Terri Shannon (later known as Terri Michaels), as well as Colt Seaver’s cousin, Howie “Kid” Munson. However, these characters don’t seem to appear in the 2024 film trailer and are not mentioned by name on IMDb.
The 1980s series is currently available to stream on Prime Video or for purchase on Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu).
The 2024 film “The Fall Guy” is not connected to the 1982 Japanese film “The Fall Guy,” directed by Kinji Fukasaku.
David Leitch
David Leitch is no stranger to action filmmaking. The Wisconsin native has made his mark in the industry as a director, stuntman, actor, writer, producer, and stunt coordinator. Leich has uncredited directorial experience dating back to 2014’s “John Wick,” but has since become known for leading films like “Atomic Blonde” in 2017 with Charlize Theron, “Deadpool 2” in 2018 with Ryan Reynolds, and “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” in 2019, starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.
Before becoming a successful director, Leitch worked extensively as a stunt performer and coordinator. To date, IMDb lists over 80 titles that feature his adrenaline-pumping talents. Leitch’s resume and skillset make him the perfect director for “The Fall Guy,” providing a level of authenticity that few in the industry can match.
Movie Plot
“The Fall Guy” is a romantic action comedy that revolves around Colt Seaver, a charming stuntman portrayed by Ryan Gosling. Colt is deeply in love with the director of his current project, Jody Moreno, played by Emily Blunt. Despite their past fling being unexpectedly cut short, Colt is determined to impress Jody by giving his best performance.
When the lead actor of the movie, Tom Ryder, disappears, Colt is told to locate him and bring him back. However, Colt is not chosen for his stunt work but rather because he holds a low position on set. As one of his castmates says in the trailer, “You’re a stuntman. No one will notice if you’re here or not.”
Colt views this as a chance to mend his rocky relationship with Jody, pushing him to tackle the daunting challenge.
Action and hilarity ensue as Colt is thrust into the world of Tom’s shady affiliates. Armed only with stage-fighting experience, Colt must retrieve Tom, impress Jody, and avoid a deadly fate at the hands of armed criminals.
