Horror fans have only a few more weeks to wait for the return of one of the most iconic franchises of the century with Saw X. The tenth film in the series, Saw X follows 2021’s Spiral but is actually a prequel to Saw II and a direct sequel to Saw.

The production will be the third Saw film directed by Kevin Greutert and will feature Tobin Bell reprising his role as Jigsaw, the franchise’s long-running villain, alongside Shawnee Smith, Michael Breach, and Steven Brand.

Production of the film was overseen by Twisted Pictures, the longtime producer of the series, and the film was shot on location in Mexico last year.

Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Saw X

If you’re interested in seeing Saw X, we have all the information you need below, including plot details, cast, crew, runtime, and more.

The Saw Franchise

The Saw saga began in 2003 when Australian filmmakers James Wan and Leigh Whannell made a short-film, titled Saw, which they used to sell the concept for a feature film to American studios. The first film in the series debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 and was released in theaters later that year, when it became a box-office sensation. Further sequels were subsequently greenlit, and the series has since become one of the highest-grossing horror franchises of the century. Films in the series have been directed by Wan, Darren Lynn Bousman, David Hackl, The Spierig Brothers, and Kevin Greutert, who is returning for Saw X.

Most of the films in the series feature or are focused upon the crimes of serial killer John Kramer, also known as “Jigsaw” or “the Jigsaw killer.” However, the ninth film in the series, Spiral, focuses on a copycat killer. In the world of the films, Kramer, a former civil engineer, becomes obsessed with forcing people to confront their own mortality after a failed suicide attempt of his own. He does so by forcing his victims to play sadistic games for their own lives, usually in locked facilities in which groups of people must turn against one another or themselves with violence in order to escape their circumstances. These “puzzles” are usually linked to personality traits or the moral qualms of the victims therein.

The character has gone on to become one of the most recognizable horror antagonists of the century, following a long line of iconic horror villains, including Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, and Leatherface.

Background and Plot

Saw X follows 2021’s Spiral, the ninth film in the series and the first to focus on a Jigsaw copycat killer rather than the villain himself. It is also the first film since 2010’s Saw 3D to bear the Saw name.

According to an IMDB synopsis, the film will follow Kramer as he travels to Mexico City to undergo an experimental medical procedure that may cure his cancer. Kramer discovers it was a scam designed to victimize the sick. In response, he unleashes his infamous arsenal of games, tests, and puzzles upon the perpetrators.

Release Date

Saw X will be released in U.S. theaters on September 29, 2023, in a wide release by Lionsgate Pictures.
