After a five-year hiatus since the release of 2018’s The Nun, a sequel will appear in theaters later this year. The ninth film in the growing Conjuring Universe of horror movies, The Nun II comes in the wake of 2019’s The Curse of La Llorona and 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.

The production reunites stars Taissa Farmiga and Jonas Bloquet alongside costars Storm Reid, Anna Popplewell, and Bonnie Aarons, known for her role in Mulholland Drive, reprising her role as the Demon Nun.

The Nun II will be directed by Michael Chaves, his third entry in the series following the above-mentioned The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Chaves collaborated on this project with Akela Cooper, horror screenwriter of recent successes such as M3GAN and Malignant.

Everything You Should Know Before Seeing The Nun II

Whether you are a longtime fan of The Conjuring movies or you’re encountering the series for the first time, here’s what you’ll want to know before watching The Nun II.

The Conjuring Universe

The Conjuring Universe was largely pioneered by filmmaker James Wan, famous for developing both the Saw and Insidious horror franchises. With the addition of The Nun II, the Conjuring Universe consists of nine films (and several fan-made short films). The success of those films has led it to become the highest-grossing horror franchise of all time, making over $2 billion at the box office worldwide.

It all began in 2013 with the release of the supernatural horror film The Conjuring, which starred Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as real-life paranormalists and authors Ed and Lorraine Warren, whose casework had already provided the inspiration for The Amityville Horror novels and film franchise. Here’s a look at the universe of movies in chronological order:

  • The Nun (2018)
  • Annabelle: Creation (2017)
  • Annabelle (2014)
  • The Conjuring (2013)
  • Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
  • The Curse of Llorona (2019)
  • The Conjuring 2 (2016)
  • The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)

It is unclear where exactly The Nun II will fit into the above timeline. The Nun II will be followed by another Conjuring film, titled Last Rites, as confirmed at this year’s CinemaCon. Further projects in the Universe are in development as well.

Plot

The official story description is as follows: “1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit follows Sister Irene as she once again comes face-to-face with Valak, the demon nun.”

The first film (The Nun) ended with Maurice, also known as “Frenchie” becoming possessed by Valek. Not much is known about the specific storyline, but with the death of the priest mentioned in the official story description, we will see Sister Irene sent to a Catholic boarding school in France where she will encounter the demon Valek once again.

The events in this film are thought to give viewers a hint at how the characters of The Conjuring and The Nun will be brought together.

The Nun II will premiere in theaters in the U.S. on September 8, 2023, in a wide release by Warner Bros. Studios.
