Everything You Should Know Before Seeing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Mario first leaped into the public imagination in 1981, when a cheerful, mustachioed character known simply as “Jumpman” debuted in Nintendo’s arcade classic Donkey Kong. Over the decades, the character — quickly renamed Mario — grew into one of the most recognizable figures in global pop culture, appearing in more than 200 video games across genres ranging from platformers and racing to role-playing and sports. Needless to say, the franchise has become the cornerstone of Nintendo’s identity.
After a critically panned movie adaptation in 1993, the franchise’s long legacy finally made its way back to the big screen in 2023, when “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” arrived as a joint production between Illumination and Nintendo. The film grossed over $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office and was loved by fans of all ages.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is based on the 2007 video game Super Mario Galaxy and its 2010 sequel, both released on the Wii, as well as Nintendo’s broader Mario franchise. The new film builds on the cast of characters from the 2023 film with the welcome additions of Rosalina, Bowser Jr., and Yoshi. While the movie draws inspiration from the Galaxy games, don’t expect a scene-for-scene remake. Instead, get ready for epic galactic wonder rooted in the fantastical spirit only Nintendo can provide.
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” can be streamed now on Peacock.

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has one of the biggest, most exciting ensemble casts in recent animated film history. Chris Pratt returns as the voice of Mario. First known for his role as Andy Dwyer in the hit show “Parks and Recreation” (2009-2015), Pratt was catapulted into superstardom as Star-Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and broader MCU, followed closely by the leading male role in the Jurassic World movies.

Benny Safdie is best known as a filmmaker with directorial credits on works like “Uncut Gems” (2019), which he shares with his brother Josh Safdie. As an actor, Safdie is most recognizable as Edward Teller in “Oppenheimer” (2023) and Nick Nikas in “Good Time” (2017).
Brie Larson voices Rosalina, the ethereal guardian of the cosmos introduced in the Super Mario Galaxy games. Larson won the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Room” (2015) and is known globally for her role as Captain Marvel in the MCU.
