Everything You Need To Know About the Fallout TV Show
The new Fallout TV show by Amazon’s Prime Video is the most recent installment in the Fallout franchise. Originally released in 1997 as a role-playing computer game for MS-DOS and Windows 95 systems by creator Tim Cain, Fallout enjoyed immense popularity and was given a sequel the following year. Since then, the Fallout franchise has had numerous additions and spinoffs across Windows, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles, mobile game platforms, and more.
In that time, the game has garnered a well-deserved cult following and has inspired several fan-made web series, including Fallout: Revelation and Fallout: Nuka Break.
Prime Video’s all-new Fallout TV series is the first mainstream iteration of its kind. The games, and their affiliated works, are well known for their retrofuturistic and atompunk style, and the TV series seems to be following suit. Unlike Marvel and DC’s multiverses and classic sci-fi futuristic settings, the Fallout lore follows an alternative universe that branches from ours sometime immediately following World War II — or perhaps as late as 1960 — creating a unique timeline that includes part of real history before diverging into distinct technologies and events.
Plot
Gameplay for the original Fallout begins nearly 100 years after humanity’s nuclear annihilation during the Great War of 2077. Since then, the surviving remnants have lived as “Vault Dwellers,” sealed away in life-sustaining chambers under the ground. That changes when Vault 13’s water purifying chip becomes faulty, and the player must exit their radiation-free haven and brave the post-apocalyptic wastelands of Southern California in search of a way to fix it.
Outside the safety of the Vault, the player is confronted by a world ravaged by radiation and under the violent regime of The Master’s mutant army. In the game, The Master scours the Earth for surviving humans in order to force their evolution and create the dawn of a new and purified race.
The new Fallout TV show appears to follow a similar initial trajectory with different character motivations. According to Amazon’s first look, the show takes place 200 years after the apocalypse, and eagle-eyed viewers of the trailer will notice that the protagonist emerges from Vault 33. This is in contrast to the game’s timeline and setting, which has the player leave Vault 13 roughly 100 years after the war. This could mean that the events of the Fallout TV show happen in or around the timeline of Fallout 4.
Nevertheless, the show centers around Lucy, a peaceful and idealistic Vault Dweller, who returns to the decimated outside world and discovers a “gleefully weird and highly violent” society of mutants, soldiers, and bounty hunters.
Neither the trailer nor the first look released by Amazon give mention of The Master, but they do introduce several characters that contain similar tropes. First is Maximus, a young soldier serving in a militant faction, the Brotherhood of Steel, which seeks to bring order to the wasteland. The second is The Ghoul, a ruthless, disfigured bounty hunter.
