How Percy Jackson and the Olympians Found New Life on Disney+
โPercy Jackson and the Olympiansโ is a fantasy-adventure series on Disney+ that follows the titular character, a 12-year-old boy who discovers heโs the son of the Greek god Poseidon. The show chronicles Percyโs experiences as a demigod attending Camp Half-Blood, a training ground for the children of gods and mortals, where he learns to harness his abilities while navigating ancient myths in the modern world.
From Page To Screen
The series is based on Rick Riordanโs bestselling book franchise, which has sold millions of copies worldwide and introduced young readers to Greek mythology through accessible, contemporary storytelling. Season 1 adapted the first novel in the Percy Jackson series, โThe Lightning Thief,โ and the upcoming season will bring the second book, โThe Sea of Monsters,โ to the screen.
The original Percy Jackson novels were first published by Disney Hyperion beginning in 2005, with โThe Lightning Thiefโ becoming an instant phenomenon among middle-grade readers. Before the current Disney+ reboot series, the franchise saw two theatrical film adaptations that received less-than-stellar reviews from critics and fans alike.
The Theatrical Adaptations
The 2010 film โPercy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,โ directed by Chris Columbus and starring Logan Lerman as Percy, Brandon T. Jackson as Grover, and Alexandra Daddario as Annabeth, earned $226.4 million worldwide but was criticized by fans for aging up the characters and overall poor adherence to the source material, and by critics for being โagreeably tame and unthreateningโ for a fantasy adventure film.
The 2013 sequel โPercy Jackson: Sea of Monsters,โ directed by Thor Freudenthal and again featuring Lerman in the lead role, performed even worse with critics and audiences, effectively ending plans for further film installments. Both movies faced backlash from Riordan himself, who publicly expressed that the films were like watching his โlifeโs work going through a meat grinder.โ
A Fresh Start on Disney+
The current Disney+ series marks a fresh start, with Rick Riordan serving as creator and executive producer alongside Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, who previously collaborated on acclaimed series such as โBlack Sailsโ (2014-2017) and โSeeโ (2019-2022). The first season premiered on December 19, 2023, earning praise for its faithfulness to the novels and the performances of the young actors.
The series swept the Childrenโs and Family Emmy Awards, winning seven, including Outstanding Young Teen Series, Outstanding Writing, and Outstanding Directing. It also earned an outstanding 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The show was renewed for a second season and has already been greenlit for a third season, adapting โThe Titanโs Curse.โ
Season 1 Recap (Spoilers):
During a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Percy Jacksonโs seemingly normal life is shattered when one of his teachers reveals herself to be an ancient Greek Fury and attacks him. Despite surviving the attack with the help of a magic sword, Percy is expelled and returned to his mother, Sally, who explains the truth: Greek gods and monsters are real, and Percy is the son of Poseidon. Percyโs friend Grover turns out to be a satyr assigned to protect him, and together they race to Camp Half-Blood when all three are attacked by a minotaur. The monster kills Sally, but Percy destroys it in a rage before collapsing at the campโs entrance.
At Camp HalfโBlood, a training ground for demigods run by the centaur Chiron and the god Dionysus, Percy learns to fight, harness his powers, and make new allies. During a game of capture the flag, he discovers his ability to control water and is claimed by Poseidon as his son. Soon after, Zeus accuses Percy of stealing his Master Bolt and threatens war unless itโs returned. When Percy discovers his mother is alive in the Underworld, he accepts a quest to retrieve the bolt and rescue her, joined by Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena, and his satyr friend, Grover.
Their journey takes them across the country, where they battle Furies in New Jersey, defeat Medusa, face Echidna and the Chimera in St. Louis, and narrowly escape the enchanted Lotus Hotel. Reaching Los Angeles, they descend into the Underworld and learn that Hadesโs Helm of Darkness has been stolen, too. Believing Percy is the thief, Hades refuses to help until Percy discovers the real culpritโs plan โ both the helm and the bolt were stolen as part of a larger scheme orchestrated by the Titan Kronos.
Escaping with magical pearls, Percy confronts Ares, the god of war, who reveals his role in the plot. After defeating Ares in battle, Percy returns the bolt to Zeus and the helm to Hades, restoring peace among the gods. Back at Camp HalfโBlood, he uncovers the real betrayer: Luke Castellan, who has been serving Kronos. Luke flees, and Percy reunites with his mother, bringing his first heroic quest full circle.
