Following the success of The Mandalorian, Andor, and The Book of Boba Fett, Disney+ is looking to raise the bar with another limited series, Ahsoka. As one of the most popular characters among Star Wars fans, Ahsoka follows a character first introduced in the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008).

Before streaming the first episode, review the information below to get up to date with who Ahsoka is, her backstory, the expected plot, and more.

Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Ahsoka

Whether you are a longtime fan of Star Wars or entering the extended universe for the first time, here is a little bit of background information you may find helpful before watching Ahsoka this summer.

Who is Ahsoka Tano?

Named after the ancient Indian emperor Ahsoka the Great, the character Ahsoka Tano was developed by George Lucas and Dave Filoni as the teenaged Jedi Padawan, or apprentice, to Anakin Skywalker.

The character was initially voiced by Ashley Eckstein in the animated shows before actress Rosario Dawson took over the live-action role in 2020. Dawson appeared as Ahsoka for the first time during season two of The Mandalorian as she fought the Magistrate.

Although initially disliked by many fans and critics, Ahsoka has since undergone significant character development and is now seen as one of the key female figures in the Star Wars universe.

Ahsoka emerged as a main character in the Clone Wars animated series, in which she continued to develop her Jedi abilities as Anakin’s Padawan. Later in the series Ahsoka left the Jedi Order after being falsely accused of a crime. Ahsoka continued to be a main character throughout much of the Star Wars Rebels series, as a member of the Rebel Alliance to fight the Galactic Empire.

What to Watch First

To fully understand the motivations and background of Ahsoka, you may want to catch up on Star Wars Rebels and the recent seasons of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett before tuning into Ahsoka later this summer. However, the limited series will be sure to stand on its own and as part of the larger development undertaken by Lucasfilm and Disney+.

Series Plot Details

Little is known about the plot of the new series, but trailer footage suggests the show will follow Ahsoka as she investigates a new threat to the galaxy. That threat is expected to be the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn disappeared with young Jedi Ezra Bridger during the final episodes of Star Wars Rebels.

Release Date & Episode Count

Ahsoka will begin with a two-episode premiere on August 23, 2023. From that point on, episodes will be released weekly on Wednesdays. There are a total of eight episodes, all of which are expected to run between 30-60 minutes.
