The well-deserved success of “The Last of Us” was made possible by viewers who support legitimate streaming services and, by extension, the actors and artists who bring the story to life. Learn how to recognize illegal streaming websites to ensure you’re accessing content responsibly and giving creators the credit they deserve.

We at streamSafely are excited to reveal everything we know so far about the all-new season. With HBO’s stellar track record and the game’s reputation for groundbreaking storytelling, Season 2 is poised to deliver another powerful and immersive television experience.

Everything You Should Know Before The Last of Us Season 2

“The Last of Us” originated as a groundbreaking video game of the same name. It was developed by Naughty Dog and released in 2013, earning widespread recognition for its emotional story and complex characters. The game follows Joel, a hardened survivor, and Ellie, a teenager immune to the fungal infection that has devastated humanity. Together, they journey across a post-apocalyptic America as Joel keeps Ellie protected from an onslaught of foes. The game’s sequel, The Last of Us Part II, released in 2020, pushed narrative boundaries even further and, despite some initial controversy over its shocking storytelling choices and inclusivity-minded character development, went on to win numerous awards, including Game of the Year. This incredible source material provided HBO with a solid foundation for creating what many consider to be the most successful video game adaptation of all time.

The Last of Us,” Season 1, premiered in January 2023, with critics and audiences praising the performances of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the lead roles, as well as the show’s faithful handling of the source material. The series achieved remarkable ratings, becoming HBO’s second-largest debut in over a decade, behind only “House of the Dragon.” Later, it went on to win multiple Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Guest Actor for Nick Offerman’s portrayal of Bill. In total, the first season was nominated for 24 Emmys and won eight of them.

Created by the original game’s director Neil Druckmann and “Chernobyl” showrunner Craig Mazin, the first season of the show demonstrated how to successfully translate a game to television — all while maintaining the emotional core that made the original story so impactful.

H3: Season 1 Recap (Spoilers)

Warning: The following recap has many spoilers from the first season!

“The Last of Us,” Season 1, begins in 2003 with the outbreak of a fungal infection that transforms humans into violent, zombie-like creatures. Joel Miller, played by Pedro Pascal, and his teenage daughter, Sarah, attempt to escape their hometown during the initial chaos of the outbreak. However, Sarah is tragically shot and killed, leaving a devastated Joel to fend for himself. Twenty years later, Joel works as a smuggler in the Boston quarantine zone alongside his partner, Tess. With the country under FEDRA’s ruthless military control, a rebel group known as the Fireflies rises to challenge their rule, even as a relentless pandemic ravages the land.

Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies, tasks Joel and Tess with escorting a teenage girl named Ellie to their base. When they discover that Ellie has been bitten but unharmed, they realize she could hold the key to a long-sought cure. After Tess becomes infected and sacrifices herself to help them escape, Joel reluctantly continues the journey westward with Ellie. Gradually, they develop a bond as they travel across America toward the Fireflies’ base.

Along the way, they meet many characters. In a flashback, the show introduces Bill and Frank, a couple who survived together for years in Lincoln, Massachusetts. When Joel and Ellie arrive in the present, they find the couple dead, having chosen to end their lives on their own terms. In Kansas City, they meet Henry and Sam, brothers trying to escape a vengeful resistance group. After deciding to join Joel and Ellie, the group is attacked by the Infected. Sam becomes infected and tries to attack Ellie, but Henry shoots him to save her and then takes his own life in despair. In Jackson, Wyoming, they find Joel’s brother Tommy alive and well after believing him to be long dead. He declines to join them, instead staying in Jackson to care for his pregnant wife, which angers Joel. Setting out again, Joel and Ellie face a winter of hardships before arriving in Salt Lake City in the spring.

Traveling through the city, Joel and Ellie are knocked unconscious by a sudden smoke bomb strike, and Joel comes to the Fireflies medical unit with their leader, Marlene, beside him. When he asks about Ellie, Joel learns that the cure the Fireflies are developing would require removing and studying Ellie’s infected brain, killing her in the process. Unable to accept losing another daughter figure, Joel massacres the Firefly doctors and medical staff, rescuing an unconscious Ellie. Marlene confronts Joel outside the facility and tries to convince him to relinquish Ellie to her for the good of humanity. Instead, Joel kills Marlene to prevent her from following them. Later, when Ellie awakes, she asks Joel what happened, but he lies, telling her that there were other immune individuals, but the Fireflies couldn’t develop a cure. The season ends with Ellie expressing that she wishes she could have done more to help the Fireflies and asks Joel to swear that everything he told her was true, and he does. Hesitantly, she accepts his answer.

“The Last of Us,” Season 1, can be streamed on Max now.

The Last of Us Part II Game Synopsis (Spoilers)

Set four years after the events of the first game, “The Last of Us Part II” begins with the fallout of Joel’s actions at the Fireflies’ lab.

Warning: Game spoilers ahead!

After Joel settles into Tommy’s community in Jackson, Wyoming, players come head to head with a woman named Abby Anderson. Trouble and violence ensues, completely upending Joel and Ellie’s world.

The game then makes a bold narrative choice by having players assume control of Abby for roughly half of the story, showing her perspective and history.

As tensions rise, the game forces players to question the nature of justice, loyalty, and redemption.

Season 2 Plot

“The Last of Us,” Season 1, was hailed for staying true to the source material, and we at StreamSafely expect nothing less from the upcoming second season.

Without getting into spoilers, Season 2 is expected to follow the stories of Ellie and her nemesis Abby as the two seek revenge on each other in the wake of the brutal events that occurred at the Fireflies lab at the end of Season 1. While “The Last of Us,” Season 1, revolved around loss, survival, and the lengths people will go to protect the ones they love, Season 2 is expected to be darker yet, centering on loss, revenge, and obsession.
