Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Minecraft
Minecraft emerged in 2009 for PC as a revolutionary sandbox game that blended action and literal world-building. Created by Markus “Notch” Persson, the game quickly became a global cultural phenomenon. The game’s core concept of mining resources and crafting items in a procedurally generated 3D world allowed players an unprecedented level of creative freedom, enabling them to build everything from simple shelters to complex, intricate civilizations. Users have even used the game to champion real world causes, the most famous of which may be the Library of Alexandria-like megastructure engineered by Reporters Without Borders to promote worldwide freedom of the press: The Uncensored Library.
As of October 2023, Minecraft has sold over 300 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling video game of all time. The game is available on Apple devices, Linux, mobile devices, Windows, Chromebook, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox. Minecraft has become more than a game — it’s a platform for creativity, education, and digital exploration that has captured the imagination of players around the world.
Minecraft is known for its low-resolution, blocky aesthetic and open-world design. Players can choose between multiple gameplay modes, including Survival, where they must gather resources, craft tools, and defend against monsters, and Creative mode, which provides unlimited resources and the ability to fly, allowing for truly limitless architectural and artistic expression.
Microsoft acquired the game in 2014 for $2.5 billion. Since then, the game has spawned a massive community of content creators, with YouTube channels and streaming platforms featuring Minecraft content generating billions of views annually. Educational institutions have embraced Minecraft: Education Edition, using the game to teach subjects ranging from history and science to mathematics and creative writing, further cementing its status as a powerful interactive learning tool.
Rumors of the film adaptation, “A Minecraft Movie,” were leaked in 2014 and subsequently confirmed by Notch via Twitter. At the time, Jill Messick was signed on as a producer alongside Roy Lee, who had produced “The Lego Movie” (2014), but little else was known. Now, after a decade of development, we’re about to have all our questions answered!

His more recent directorial works include “Thelma the Unicorn” (2024), the miniseries “Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators” (2023), and the short film “Ninety-Five Senses” (2022).
