Everything You Should Know Before Seeing The White Lotus, Season 3
“The White Lotus” was born amid COVID-era restrictions. Seeking to minimize logistics and adhere to the existing social and health guidelines, creator Mike White, known for his work on “School of Rock” (2003) and “Enlightened,” envisioned a series that could be filmed in a single location. The show’s dark examination of privilege, wealth disparity, and human nature, contrasted with its idyllic resort setting, created a terrifyingly enthralling story. The tremendous talent of the ensemble cast, including Jennifer Coolidge, Murray Bartlett, Sydney Sweeny, Alexandra Daddario, and Jake Lacy, was the final piece in a perfect project, and the series was propelled to immediate success virtually overnight. The series’s first season won 10 Emmys, and Season 2 would follow its success with an additional five.
In contrast to many of today’s spinoffs, sequels, and multiverses that make use of a single set of characters, “The White Lotus” is an anthology series, meaning that each season is more or less completely self-contained. The second season features an all-new cast — save two returning characters from Season 1 — but maintains continuity with the series’ earlier episodes by returning to the same themes. Additionally, each season is set at The White Lotus Hotel, albeit at different international locations that the resort owns.
Where Season 1 was set at The White Lotus, Maui, Season 2 is set at the White Lotus, Sicily, and features Aubrey Plaza, Will Sharpe, Theo James, and Meghann Fahy in the leading roles, alongside many others. The upcoming third season, set among the luxury beaches of Thailand, is known to have two returning characters from Season 1 and promises to delve even deeper into themes of wealth and classism, all tied up neatly with a dark sense of humor and no shortage of body bags.
Given that each season largely stands alone, you can enjoy “The White Lotus,” Season 3, without having seen the previous two. However, both seasons are well worth the watch!
Season 1: In paradise, death is just the beginning. At the exclusive White Lotus resort in Hawaii, a group of wealthy vacationers are about to discover that their dream getaway is anything but perfect. With newly-weds questioning their marriage, an aging heiress searching for connection, an entitled family grappling with their own toxicity, and the resort’s manager teetering on the edge of a breakdown, “The White Lotus,” Season 1 is a timebomb of secrets, desires, and runaway emotions. But one question looms over their sun-soaked drama: Which one of these characters isn’t making it home?
Season 2: The White Lotus opens its doors for another season of seduction, betrayal, and death. Between the gilded halls of a clifftop palace and the glittering waters of the Mediterranean, seven days will transform the lives of its glamorous guests forever. While three generations of men tangle for the attention of local sex workers, two young couples find their friendship treading into the dangerous waters of attraction and jealousy. By the week’s end, bodies will be floating in the surf.
All seasons of “The White Lotus” can be streamed on Max.
