Everything You Should Know About Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair(2026)

“Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair” is a four-episode limited revival miniseries picking up roughly 20 years after the original show’s 2006 finale.

The storyline centers on Malcolm — now all grown up and a father himself — who has spent years carefully distancing himself and his daughter from his spectacularly chaotic family. After shielding himself and his daughter from his family for over a decade, Malcolm is dragged back into their orbit when Hal and Lois demand his presence at their 40th wedding anniversary party.

The original “Malcolm in the Middle” was created by Linwood Boomer and premiered on Fox in January 2000, running for seven seasons and 151 episodes before concluding in May 2006. The show was one of the first comedy series not to use a live studio audience or laugh track, a format that later became the template for series like “The Office” (2005-2013), “Modern Family” (2009-2020), and “Arrested Development” (2003-2019). The show won seven Emmys over its six years, and it never truly faded from the cultural conversation.

The road to this revival was a long one. In 2016, Bryan Cranston was the first to publicly support the idea of a reunion, in an interview with E! Insider. By 2023, Frankie Muniz confirmed that he would love to be involved, but series creator Linwood Boomer reportedly had no interest in returning unless a pair of specific original writers were brought back into the fold alongside him.

Boomer would ultimately get his wish with not two but four of the series’ writers returning: Matthew Carlson, Michael Glouberman, Alan J. Higgins, and Gary Murphy.

The concept that ultimately put things in motion came from Boomer’s wife and producing partner, Tracy Katsky Boomer, who posed one simple question: What would Malcolm’s life look like if he were raising a daughter just like him? “Oh my God, that kid would be miserable,” Boomer recalled to AP Entertainment. And the rest is history.

The original “Malcolm in the Middle” TV series can now be streamed on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
