Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)

Spider-Man has one of the most storied histories in all of popular culture. The character was first introduced in Marvel Comics’ “Amazing Fantasy” #15 in 1962, created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. Peter Parker became an instant icon, in part, because he was so different from every superhero before him. He was a struggling teenager, awkward and overlooked, who happened to get bitten by a radioactive spider. The character’s relatability resonated with readers, spawning decades of comics, animated television series, and eventually a massive film presence.

Spider-Man On The Big Screen

On the big screen, Spider-Man has lived multiple lives. Sam Raimi’s trilogy starring Tobey Maguire launched in 2002 and redefined superhero cinema. Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man films with Andrew Garfield followed in the early 2010s.

Then, in 2016, Tom Holland debuted as Peter Parker in “Captain America: Civil War,” marking Spider-Man’s long-awaited entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018) introduced Miles Morales to mainstream audiences and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Its sequel, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (2023), pushed the visual storytelling even further.

What To Watch Before Brand New Day

Three standalone Holland films followed: “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), directed by Jon Watts, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021), which became a cultural phenomenon, pulling Peter into a multiverse-shattering adventure that brought together three generations of big-screen Spider-Men and earned more than $1.9 billion at the global box office.

Now comes the fourth installment, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” (2026), and with a new, if melancholy, start. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton — who previously brought “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (2021) to the MCU — the film is set four years after the memory-erasing ending of “No Way Home” (2021).

While this film follows the aftermath of “No Way Home” (2021), each film is largely a standalone adventure. To get the full experience, watch or revisit the existing films of the newest franchise in order:

  • “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017): The world has Avengers. New York has Spider-Man. He’s just a kid from Queens, but Peter Parker must thwart the flying arms dealer known as Vulture and still make it to class on time.
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019): He just wanted a vacation. When Venice is attacked by a Water Elemental, Peter Parker learns that being a hero means there’s no such thing as time off.
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021): One spell. Three worlds. Every villain ever faced — all at once. When the multiverse breaks open, the only thing standing between chaos and catastrophe is the crime-fighting kid in the red suit.

All three Spider-Man movies are available to stream now on Disney+.

All About Spider-Man: Brand New Day

New York City has forgotten Peter Parker. But Spider-Man never forgot New York. When mounting pressure to defend his city against growing threats pushes him past his breaking point, Spider-Man undergoes a surprising physical transformation in his very DNA.

Director: Destin Daniel Cretton

Destin Daniel Cretton is a Hawaiian-born filmmaker who built his reputation on emotionally grounded, character-driven stories before making the leap to blockbuster filmmaking. His feature-length film “Short Term 12” (2013) — a drama drawn from his own experiences working in a foster care facility — swept the Grand Jury and Audience Awards at South by Southwest in 2013.

He followed that with “The Glass Castle” (2017) and “Just Mercy” (2019), the Michael B. Jordan-led legal drama that won the BET Award for Best Movie. His MCU debut came with “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (2021). He also developed and directed the Disney+ series “American Born Chinese” (2023) and is currently attached to “Wonder Man” (2026-present) as a director, writer, and executive producer.

Genre

Following the previous three films, “Brand New Day” falls squarely into the Superhero, Action, Adventure, Fantasy, and Sci-Fi genres, with an added Urban Adventure quality that has consistently defined this particular corner of the MCU. Unlike its predecessors, however, the new film is expected to have a more somber tone initially and deeper emotional weight.

Runtime

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is set to have a runtime of 2 hours and 30 minutes, making it the longest film in the franchise.

Rating

The Motion Picture Association has rated “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” PG-13 for sequences of action and violence, as well as some language. The three previous MCU Spider-Man films have also received a PG-13 rating, as well as Destin Daniel Cretton’s MCU debut “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (2021).

Theatrical Release Date

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is scheduled to swing into theaters on July 31, 2026.
