Now, Netflix is expanding on her story in an all-new animated series that seeks to tie together several exciting iterations and give viewers a new chapter of arrow-shooting, motorcycle-riding high adventure.

Since its announcement, we at StreamSafely have been eager to dive into the details of the new series’ production and plot. So whether you’re a budding new fan of Lara Croft or first played as her on your PC back in 1996, we invite you to a behind-the-scenes look at the next chapter of this iconic adventurer.

Everything You Need To Know About Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft

Lara Croft, the dual pistol-wielding archaeologist, was first introduced to the public as the main character of the Tomb Raider video game. The game began production in 1993 by Core Design and was released three years later by publisher Eidos Interactive. Originally released for the Sega Saturn, followed shortly by PC and PlayStation, the game was met with praise from professional critics and players alike for the intricacy of its control and gameplay, the revolutionary graphics of the time, and the ingenuity of the puzzles that became a hallmark of the action-adventure franchise.

Since that time, the game series has enjoyed immense popularity, raising Lara Croft to a new level of cultural stardom. The developers released a new game to the franchise virtually every year since, with immediate sequels coming annually from 1997 to 2003. To date, the game has over 20 installments. Earlier this year, the original trilogy was announced to be remastered and is set for release in 2024.

Lara Croft’s dominance in entertainment is not just limited to gaming systems like PlayStation, Game Boy, and Xbox. She also ascended to the silver screen in 2001 in a full-length movie called “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” starring Angelina Jolie. Two years later, Jolie returned for the sequel alongside Gerard Butler in “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life.” Both films experienced box office success, earning back roughly double their estimated budget worldwide. However, some viewers voiced criticisms of its over-the-top spectacle and the over-sexualization of Jolie in the role.

These concerns were remedied in the 2018 movie reboot “Tomb Raider” which starred Alicia Vikander as a more grounded, internally motivated Lara Croft. Although a script for a second film was written and had a director in place, the COVID-19 crisis led to the sequel being canceled.

The animated series, “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,” was announced by Netflix in early 2021 alongside “Skull Island.” Taking inspiration from Japan and its culture, both shows have been drawn in the style of Japanese anime, which is known for exaggerated features and expressions, vivid colors, and detailed backgrounds. The animation is being produced by Powerhouse Animation Studio, which previously worked on “Castlevania” and “Blood of Zeus.”

The new TV series is meant to follow the events of the Survivor trilogy from the Tomb Raider game franchise. The first game in that specific saga, “Tomb Raider” was developed by Crystal Dynamics and released in 2013. The story and gameplay follows Lara Croft after being shipwrecked on an island. She and the other survivors must navigate the jungle and escape the malevolent cult that calls the island home. “Tomb Raider” was followed by “Rise of the Tomb Raider” and “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” in 2015 and 2018, wherein Lara Croft searches for lost cities and battles the paramilitary group Trinity that seeks to uncover the lost civilizations’ powers and use them for itself.

Plot

When an ancient Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor, Lara must chase the suspect around the globe, only to find the thief has a strange, personal connection to the Croft family name. As she races across countries and down into unexplored tombs, Lara must face herself and decide the kind of person she wants to become.

Release Date & Episode Count

“Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” will be released exclusively on Netflix on October 10, 2024. Writer Tasha Huo confirmed on the “Act Two” podcast with co-host Josh Hallman and guest Marty Bennett that the show will be eight episodes, each roughly 22 minutes.

Given that the series will be released exclusively on Netflix, steer clear of any other platforms that claim to offer it, no matter how legitimate they may seem.
