Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Stranger Things, Season 5
“Stranger Things” first crept onto our screens on July 15, 2016. Created by the Duffer Brothers for Netflix, the show quickly became one of the streaming platform’s most successful and most popular original series. The show draws heavy inspiration from 1980s pop culture, particularly the works of Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, and John Carpenter, while paying homage to classic films like “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982), “The Goonies” (1985), and “Stand by Me” (1986), which itself is based on King’s novella The Body. The series masterfully combines elements of science fiction, horror, and coming-of-age drama, all wrapped in a nostalgic celebration of Reagan-era small-town America, complete with a period-accurate soundtrack, fashion, and setting.
The story begins in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, in 1983, when young Will Byers mysteriously vanishes, triggering a series of chilling supernatural events. These events uncover the sinister experiments of a secretive government lab and the existence of a terrifying parallel dimension known as the Upside Down. Meanwhile, a mysterious girl with psychokinetic powers, known only as Eleven, escapes from the lab and forms a powerful bond with Will’s friends. As the series progresses, the supernatural threat grows, challenging not just the young protagonists but the entire town of Hawkins.
Over its four seasons from 2016 to 2022, “Stranger Things” has evolved from a small-town mystery to an expansive supernatural epic, garnering numerous awards and accolades, including 12 Primetime Emmy Awards and the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2017. Each season has progressively raised the stakes, with Season 4 particularly praised for its darker tone, complex storytelling, and the introduction of Vecna as a formidable villain. The show’s impact on popular culture is undeniable, sparking a global resurgence of interest in 80s music—most notably Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” in Season 4—along with fashion and nostalgia-driven entertainment, establishing itself as one of the greatest shows of its time.
To appreciate the full spectacle and cultural moment that is “Stranger Things,” we at StreamSafely recommend watching all the previous seasons or revisiting them now on Netflix.
Season 1 (2016): When 12-year-old Will Byers vanishes into thin air, his friends discover a mysterious girl with supernatural powers who might hold the key to finding him. As the small town of Hawkins faces terrifying forces from another dimension, a sinister government facility’s dark experiments threaten to unleash an evil that could consume them all.
Season 2 (2017): Just when life seems to be returning to normal in Hawkins, Will’s traumatic visions reveal a growing darkness that threatens to consume not just him, but everything he loves. As a new girl named Max joins the party, Eleven explores her past, including a reunion with her “sister,” Kali (Eight). Meanwhile, an ancient evil — the Mind Flayer — begins to set its sights on our world.
Season 3 (2019): Summer in Hawkins brings new romance, a shiny new mall, and a sinister Soviet conspiracy that’s turning the gang’s neighbors into something inhuman. As the kids navigate growing up and growing apart, they must face their most dangerous adventure yet when the Mind Flayer returns with a devastating new plan.
Season 4 (2022): With the party scattered between Hawkins, California, and Russia, a new supernatural threat emerges in the form of Vecna, a malevolent being with a shocking connection to Eleven’s past. As a wave of brutal murders rocks Hawkins and Eleven struggles to regain her powers, the friends must find a way to reunite and confront the darkest evil they’ve ever faced — before it’s too late.
Plot
Netflix and the creative team behind “Stranger Things” are keeping the plot details for the fifth and final season under wraps, except for the episode titles listed below. However, the casting of Jamie Campbell Bower suggests that his character, Vecna, will return as the main villain of the show. Additionally, in 2022, show creator Matt Duffer told TVLine that the final season would include a time jump. As of now, in 2025, it remains unclear whether that concept is still part of the storyline.
