Heigh-ho! The Disney animated masterpiece that started it all is returning to theaters as an all-new, live-action adaptation: “Snow White” (2025). From enchanted forests to poisoned apples, the story of Snow White has been etched into cultural memory for generations. Now, Disney invites audiences to rediscover this cherished tale nearly nine decades later.

As Disney’s journey into live-action remakes reaches this historic milestone, we at StreamSafely are excited to see what’s in store. After production delays that bumped the movie’s release back by a year, we encourage you to skip the illegal streaming sites and head straight to the theaters to support the cast and crew who worked so hard to make this beloved fairy tale come to life. This live-action remake promises to bring new spectacle and adventure to the timeless story while honoring the magic that has captivated audiences since 1937.

Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Snow White (2025)

“Snow White” (2025) is the live-action remake of Disney’s first full-length animated feature, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” which was released in 1937. The movie was a cultural sensation, being not only Disney’s first animated film but the first full-length animated movie of all time. In the upcoming 2025 remake, Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot are taking up the historic, iconic mantles of Snow White and the Evil Queen, respectively, in the newest addition to Disney’s live-action retellings.

Disney’s tradition of reimagining their animated classics gained significant traction following the box office success of “Alice in Wonderland” (2010), directed by Tim Burton, which grossed over $1 billion and demonstrated the potential of live-action adaptations. Earlier attempts, such as “The Jungle Book” (1994) and “101 Dalmatians” (1996) with Glenn Close, were few and far between. However, “Maleficent” (2014), which retold the story of “Sleeping Beauty” (1959) through the perspective of its antagonist, cemented Disney’s modern strategy of live-action reimaginings. Then, after the success of “Cinderella” in 2015, the studio has consistently revisited its animated repertoire, releasing hits like “The Jungle Book” (2016), “The Little Mermaid” (2023), and the upcoming “Mufasa: The Lion King” (2024).

Disney has even started producing live-action sequels, like “Alice Through the Looking Glass” (2016) and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” (2019), as well as Disney+ content like “Pinocchio” (2022). “Snow White” will be followed by “Lilo & Stitch” later in 2025 and “Moana” in 2026, featuring the original voice cast, Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson.

Nearly all Disney movies and properties are available to stream on Disney+.

Marc Webb

At the helm of “Snow White” (2025) is director Marc Webb. Webb is an American producer and director who began his career directing music videos before exploding onto the big screen with his directorial debut “(500) Days of Summer” (2009), starring Joseph Gordon-Lebitt and Zooey Deschanel. He also directed “The Amazing Spider-Man” (2012) and its 2014 sequel, both starring Andrew Garfield as the web-slinging superhero and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. More recently, he’s served as an executive producer on shows like “Just Beyond” and “Death and Other Details.”

Movie Plot

After losing her father, the king, Snow White falls victim to the Evil Queen’s malice, which spreads across the entire kingdom. As the Queen’s scorn turns into murderous jealousy, Snow White escapes into the wilderness, where she meets seven spirited dwarfs. Together, Snow White and the dwarfs must unite to confront the Evil Queen and save her father’s kingdom.

Controversy and Delays

In June 2021, it was announced that Rachel Zegler would be portraying Snow White in Disney’s latest adaptation. The casting choice was immediately met with online backlash. Some fans felt that Zelgler, who is of Colombian and Polish descent, did not embody the traditional German character of Snow White. The criticism alleged that the studio was going out of its way to be progressive to the detriment of the source material. The complaints mirrored the controversy that surrounded Haley Bailey’s casting as Ariel in 2019 for the 2023 live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.”

The film faced growing backlash starting in January 2022 when Peter Dinklage, known for his role in “Game of Thrones” and his advocacy as someone with dwarfism, criticized the film’s reinforcement of dwarfism stereotypes. Disney responded by pledging a “different approach” and consulting with the dwarfism community.

This new approach was made public in July 2023 through a series of leaked photos published by the Daily Mail that showed the dwarfs portrayed by diverse actors, only one of whom has a short stature. Disney initially claimed the photos were fake, later admitting they were from the production but “not official.” Following internet backlash, Disney released a promotion in October 2023 featuring CGI dwarfs instead, sparking further criticism for whitewashing, lack of dwarfism representation, and an uncanny valley design. The studio delayed the film’s release from March 2024 to March 2025, citing the 2023 SAG-AFTRA Strike rather than the casting controversy.

Genre

“Snow White” (2025) is a family-friendly, fantasy musical adventure featuring new, original songs by EGOT-winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, known for their work on “La La Land” (2017), the stage version of “Dear Evan Hansen,” and “The Greatest Showman” (2017).

The runtime of the new Snow White movie has not yet been confirmed. For comparison, the original 1937 animated film had a runtime of 1 hour and 23 minutes.
