The Juice is loose! Prepare to step back into the mind of Tim Burton and reenter the zany world of “Beetlejuice.” After 36 years, the Deetz family returns to Winter River, Connecticut, and their old haunted house on the top of the hill. Still plagued by the memory of otherworldly horrors that turned their home into an undead circus, the Deetzes are about to find that the show is far from over.

Join our team at StreamSafely as we guide you back into the Afterlife and examine everything there is to know about this highly anticipated sequel. We’ll take you through all the spooks and demons of Tim Burton’s colorful underworld, all while helping you stay clear of real-world monsters that pose a threat to your cybersecurity. While freelancing bio-exorcists like Betelgeuse won’t be able to harm you, illegal streaming platforms certainly can, so here’s how to view the new Beetlejuice film wisely.

Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” also being called Beetlejuice 2, is the long-awaited sequel to director Tim Burton’s original 1988 film, “Beetlejuice.” The first film was a box office success, earning back five times its estimated $15 million budget. It was hailed critically for its upheaval of the horror genre, creating a world full of ghosts that are equal parts gruesome and wacky. It even went on to win the Academy Award for Best Makeup.

The original film opens with Adam and Barbra Maitland, whose idyllic country life is cut short following a tragic car accident. Now living as ghosts in their own home, the Maitlands must contend with the strange rules that govern the recently deceased and the reality of the Afterlife. Their frustration reaches comical heights when a new living family, the Deetzes, moves into their house, and the Maitlands turn to an eccentric “bio-exorcist” named Betelgeuse (yes, that’s the correct spelling) to haunt the newcomers away.

Be sure to watch the original so that you’re up to speed for the sequel. “Beetlejuice” can be streamed on-demand as part of a subscription to Prime Video.

The Beetlejuice franchise has developed a well-earned cult following since the first film premiered. Unfortunately, as with many popular movies, this acclaim has led to widespread demand for similar content, but not all providers have your best interests in mind. Ecosystems of illegal content distribution are rampant online, and we encourage you to protect yourself from pirated content as you explore more of Tim Burton’s world and other entries to the dark, comedic genre.

As a direct sequel, rather than a spin-off or reimagining, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” brings the iconic cast back to the big screen. Much to fans’ delight, they will be joined by new cast members Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe, who have already made names for themselves in dark, bizarre, and over-the-top roles such as Wednesday Addams and the Green Goblin.

Tim Burton

Tim Burton has returned to direct Beetlejuice 2, building on his lively world of the dead and the story of the Deetz family. Burton is known for his ability to combine the beautiful and the macabre, creating dark, twisted worlds that are colorful, vibrant, and inviting. He is most widely known for his work on the 1993 stop-motion film “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (where he was a writer, not a director, contrary to popular belief), “Edward Scissorhands” in 1990, and “Batman” in 1989 with Michael Keaton in the titular role and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. In 1992, he directed “Batman Returns,” where Keaton played opposite Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman and Danny DeVito as Penguin.

More recently, Tim Burton wowed Netflix viewers in 2022 with his live-action take on the Addams Family, “Wednesday,” starring Jenna Ortega. The popular series has already been confirmed for a second season.

Burton is renowned for his close relationships with the actors he works with, repeatedly calling on their talents across different projects. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Jenna Ortega all star in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and have all appeared principally in Tim Burton productions.

Movie Plot

Thirty-six years after the events of the first film, the Deetz family mourns the loss of Charles Deetz, beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Still haunted by memories of her childhood, Lydia’s life is again thrown into mayhem when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, accidentally summons Betelgeuse into the land of the living — and opens a portal for bigger, badder demons that all have a score to settle.

Genre

In Tim Burton’s signature style, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” stands at the intersection of comedy, fantasy, and horror. The first movie was noteworthy for brief jump-scares and unsettling character designs that bordered on grotesque. While these can be unnerving and frightening for young viewers, the new film, like its predecessor, is likely to follow suit with similar style choices and intense sequences of peril and gore. Unlike IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes omits the Horror tag for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” entirely.

Runtime

No official runtime has been announced for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” but internet rumors claim the film could be as long as a whopping 2 hours and 24 minutes. This seems like overly dramatic — or overly optimistic — speculation from fervent fans, as the original film was only 1 hour and 32 minutes. In the original, however, Betelgeuse himself only had 17 minutes of screen time. Given the character’s popularity today, we at StreamSafely speculate that we’ll see a lot more of the ghost with the most than we did back in 1988.

Rating

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has not yet been rated by the MPA, but StreamSafely expects a PG-13 rating for frightening elements and macabre themes. Surprisingly, the original horror-comedy was only rated PG, a categorization that would unlikely hold up against today’s standards.

Tim Burton’s 2010 “Alice in Wonderland” also pushed what was acceptable under a PG rating with many sequences that may not have been suitable for children, including the Queen of Heart’s putrid moat dotted with decapitated heads. In 2007, Burton’s “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” was rated R, and his recent Netflix series “Wednesday” was recommended for viewers at least 14 years of age.

So when it comes to Burton’s level of macabre, you never know quite what you’ll get. It’s always best to err on the side of caution before viewing.

Theatrical Release Date

Cast & Crew

Jenna Ortega headlines the cast of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid. As mentioned, Ortega played the titular role in the Netflix series “Wednesday,” and she has carved out a space for herself among the scream queens, especially for her role as Tara Carpenter in “Scream” (2022) and “Scream VI” (2023).

To the thrill of fans, Michael Keaton is returning as Betelgeuse himself. Keaton’s recent credits include John “Aristotle” Knox in “Knox Goes Away” (2023), Adrian Toomes in “Morbius” (2022), and Ramsey Clark in “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (2020).

Reprising her role of Lydia Deetz is Winona Ryder, who is known for her long career across a multitude of genres. She portrayed Jo March in the period piece “Little Women” back in 1994, starred opposite Adam Sandler in 2002 in the comedy “Mr. Deeds,” and took to space in 1997 for “Alien: Resurrection” and in 2009 for “Star Trek.” Her recent rise to fame among younger generations stems from her portrayal of Joyce Byers in the Netflix series “Stranger Things.”

Also returning to the world of Beetlejuice is Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz. While her credits are too many to mention, she recently portrayed Ruth in 2024’s “Argile” and Jackie in Netflix’s “Pain Hustlers” in 2023. In addition, she is beloved for her role as Moira Rose in the comedy series “Schitt’s Creek.”

Notable newcomers to the cast include Willem Dafoe, who plays a ghost named Wolf Jackson, and Monica Bellucci, who plays Delores, rumored to be Betelgeuse’s wife.
