Everything You Should Know Before Seeing The Wild Robot
“The Wild Robot” is DreamWorks Animation’s adaptation of the 2016 middle-grade novel by Peter Brown of the same name. The illustrated book became a sensation upon its release, becoming No. 1 on the New York Times Bestseller list. The novel and the upcoming movie follow the story of a robot named Roz who wakes up on a strange, wild island, unsure how she arrived there or how she will survive. Eventually befriending the forest critters that live there, Roz explores who she is, where she came from, and how she fits into the world around her.
The story targets young readers aged 8 to 11 and is illustrated by simple yet charming black-and-white depictions of Roz exploring the natural wonder of the untamed island. DreamWorks’ rendition runs in the other direction, producing a vibrant, visually stunning portrayal of the natural world. The nearly dialogue-free teaser trailer for the film has enchanted viewers with a carousel of breathtaking moments, from seascapes to butterfly colonies, all backed by a marvelous, low-tempo rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.”
While departing from the creative style of the book’s illustrations, the film’s visual style still conveys a sense of storybook wonder with artistry that evokes broad brushstrokes and watercolors. DreamWorks has truly outdone itself.
Brown’s original novel was followed by two others: “The Wild Robot Escapes” in 2017 and “The Wild Robot Protects” in 2023. His works have earned him numerous awards, including the Horn Book Award, two E.B. White Awards, and a Children’s Choice Award for Illustrator of the Year. Initially published in English, “The Wild Robot” is now available in over 20 languages. If you’re a parent and this series is not yet on your child’s book list or wish list, be sure to recommend them. Once they pick up these books, they may not want to set them down.
Peter Brown’s strong debut novel, “Flight of the Dodo,” was released in 2005 by the publisher Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, a subset of Hachette Book Group. However, Brown’s first book was completed at age six and titled “The Adventures of Me and My Dog ‘Buffy’.” Brown charmingly made that early work available to his fans online through his website, PeterBrownStudio.com, where he publishes updates about his children’s books and maintains a blog that features behind-the-scenes insight.
Chris Sanders
Colorado native Chris Sanders has taken to the director’s chair to captain DreamWorks’ adaptation of Peter Brown’s book, “The Wild Robot.” Previously, Chris Sanders co-wrote and co-directed 2010’s “How To Train Your Dragon” with Dean DeBlois. The film went on to become an entire franchise, including two full-length sequels, several short films, and a planned live-action remake. The move even inspired the creation of an entire world in Universal Orlando Resort’s Universal Epic Universe, as seen in the YouTube promo.
Sanders and DeBlois also directed Disney’s 2002 film, “Lilo & Stitch,” which was animated in Sanders’ own personal style, giving the animated movie its iconic look. In 2003, the film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, losing to Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away.”
Movie Plot
The robot, Roz, opens her eyes for the first time to find herself on a remote, weather-beaten island. With no understanding of who she is or where she came from, Roz must learn how to survive her unfamiliar surroundings by learning from the island’s hostile and untrusting animal inhabitants.
Her trajectory changes when an orphaned gosling imprints on her, believing her to be his mother. Roz must take it upon herself to care for and raise the tiny creature even as characters from her past begin to catch up with her and arrive on the island.
